Few studies have assessed the therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD). In the trial reported here, six individuals with a diagnosis of COPD were assessed before and after
acupuncture treatment. Respiratory function was found to improve after treatment, with increased forced vital
capacity and decreased heart rate. This suggests that acupuncture treatment may be effective in the treatment
of advanced cases of COPD
